Firefighters evacuate homes in Henrietta due to dangerous gas leak

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A number of homes in the area of Farnsworth Drive South and Camelot Drive in Henrietta due to a situation involving dangerous levels of gas.

Firefighters responded to the area around 6:15 p.m. due to reports of a natural gas odor in the neighborhood, according to a report. The gas was traced to an unoccupied house with dangerously high — explosive, according to Fire Chief Mark Cholach — levels detected at the front door. Firefighters evacuated nearby homes and requested additional crews.

RG&E teams arrived quickly to secure power and shut off the gas at the street valve, and safely ventilate the home. CHS Mobile Integrated Healthcare provided an ambulance as a precaution.

Neighbors were allowed to return to their homes after about an hour, once gas levels were deemed safe. The scene was handed over to RG&E, the Sheriff’s Office, and the property owner by 8:30 p.m.

Cholach said there were no injuries to his knowledge and that a cause had not yet been determined.
