EastEnders has announced a new issue-led storyline, with one of the BBC soap’s central younger characters set to be diagnosed with epilepsy.
Upcoming episodes of the BBC soap will see Davinder “Nugget” Gulati (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) diagnosed with epilepsy following medical test prompted by his recent head trauma.
During the February 9, 2026 episode of the soap opera, viewers saw Nugget experience his first seizure after suffering several spells of disorientation and confusion since returning home from hospital last month.
As the storyline continues and further testing is carried out, Nugget is diagnosed with epilepsy, setting him on a challenging and emotional journey as he learns to manage the condition and adjust to its impact on his daily life.
The BBC soap is working closely with the Epilepsy Society to raise awareness and ensure the story is portrayed accurately and as sensitively as possible.
EastEnders Executive Producer, Ben Wadey, emphasized the importance of handling the storyline with care. “We are committed to portraying Nugget’s journey authentically and with sensitivity, so have sought advice from Epilepsy Society to ensure an accurate representation of the challenges a young person may face following their diagnosis”.
Clare Pelham, Chief Executive at Epilepsy Society also highlighted the importance of the storyline. “One in 100 people has epilepsy, yet many keep it hidden because of stigma. That’s why we were delighted when EastEnders asked for our advice on portraying Nugget’s epilepsy story accurately,” Pelham explained. “EastEnders has a powerful record of tackling tough issues. By showing what seizures are really like and how to support someone with epilepsy, Nugget’s story can spark conversations, reduce stigma, and help bring the condition out of the shadows”.
