With the high school winter sports postseason in its very earliest stages, local athletes will just be getting their feet wet — in more ways than one — this weekend.
Girls swimmers and divers will compete in the winter’s first state competitions this weekend with Class 4A championship action taking place Thursday and Friday, while 3A state competition is set for Friday and Saturday, at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.
The girls swimming and diving season will come to a head with 5A competition Feb. 17-18 back at VMAC.
Most local participants will enter the state meets with an underdog status. But, a few will be among the favorites to take home championship hardware.
One of those favorites is Windsor senior diver Reagan Annable.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)Annable was the 4A one-meter diving runner-up each of the past two years behind Niwot’s Izzy Fay, who has since moved on to competing collegiately for California State, Bakersfield.
This past month, Annable shared with the Greeley Tribune her desire to win a state title while also keeping a grounded perspective on what it means, overall, to dive at a high level.
“I do want to win a state title,” Annable said. “I think that would be amazing after the year I’ve had. It would be such a huge blessing. I say it before every meet, ‘I’m so grateful that God has given me the opportunity to be here, right now, diving.’ ”
Here’s a look at what Annable and other local competitors have in store during the next two weeks of state swimming and diving competition:
