FCS Programs That Enter 2026 With the Most Consecutive Winning Seasons

For some FCS football programs, even a subpar season tends to end with a winning record. Here are consistently strong programs that are riding the longest streaks above .500.

Seven different FCS football programs will enter the 2026 season only knowing winning records during the 2020s decade – if not longer.

North Dakota State would have topped the list, but its FCS run has come to an end with 16 consecutive winning seasons because it’s moving up to the FBS this year. Its long-time rival South Dakota State inherits the top spot with 14 straight seasons above .500.

Heading into the 2026 season, here are the FCS programs with at least six consecutive winning seasons, and they’re all planning to continue the high level of success:

    1. South Dakota State – 14 (Since 2012)

Like NDSU, the Jackrabbits’ streak of winning seasons have all led to the FCS playoffs, and they include claiming back-to-back national championships in 2022 and ’23. Their four conference titles (MVFC) this decade are the high among the programs on this list.

    2. Montana – 13 (Since 2013)

Speaking of the FCS playoffs, no program has more appearances than the Grizzlies (29). They played only two games during the spring 2021 campaign, winning both.

    3. Montana State – 7 (Since 2018)

The Bobcats did not play during the pandemic-impacted 2020-21 academic year, so their streak surrounds it. It’s been highlighted by their 2025 national championship season.

Montana State earned No. 1 by capturing the 2025 FCS national championship. The Bobcats’ only other top ranking this decade occurred with the final regular-season poll in 2024.

    T4. Rhode Island – 6 (Since 2020)

The Rams have enjoyed a turnaround during the 2020s decade with more wins (44) than in the 15 prior seasons combined (41, 2005-19). Their 2024 playoff appearance was the program’s first since 1985.

    T4. Richmond – 6 (Since 2020)

Like Rhode Island, the Spiders’ 44 wins this decade tie for 10th-most in the FCS (also UC Davis). They departed CAA Football off back-to-back titles and lead followers into the Patriot League.

    T4. Tarleton State – 6 (Since 2020)

The Texans moved to the FCS in 2020 and have only experienced winning seasons, starting with 5-3 in spring 2021. They also had winning records in 2018 and ’19 to end their Division II run, so their streak is eight when going beyond the FCS.

    T4. UC Davis – 6 (Since 2020)

UCD’s successful run followed only one winning record from 2011-19. The Aggies’ 11 wins in coach Tim Plough’s first season in 2024 mark the program’s Division I high.
