An Oakland man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Saturday after allegedly attacking an older couple in Ukiah, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
According to the UPD, officers responded to the 800 block of N. Oak Street around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 when suspicious circumstances were reported in the area by Clarence Wells, 37, of Oakland, who reportedly told UPD Dispatch that “he was unsure of what happened, but medical was needed and two subjects were not breathing. Wells also told UPD Dispatch there was a firearm in the residence but he was unsure where.”
Officers reported surrounding the residence and using “their PA System to order anybody in the residence outside due to the suspicious nature of the call.” After not receiving a response, officers entered the residence and saw two victims inside with major injures to their heads, identified only as a 75-year-old Ukiah man and a 72-year-old Ukiah woman.
Wells was described as lying on the floor of the residence awaiting the arrival of officers, who report that he was detained without incident and medical personnel were summoned for the victims.
The UPD reports determining that “Wells was a close family friend of the victims and considered to be family, (and had been) staying with the victims temporarily. At some point during the evening, Wells became upset and assaulted the victims with a skateboard, (striking them both) in the head multiple times.”
As to the condition of the victims, the UPD reports that both “were transported by ground ambulance and later transported by air out of county to be treated for their injuries. (Their condition was unknown at the time a press release was prepared) but the UPD described both as “suspected to be stable with possible facial fractures and lacerations.”
UPD detectives reportedly tried to “speak with Wells, but were unable to determine what the motive for the attack was, or what kind of argument occurred prior.” Wells was booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and abuse of an elder or dependent adult. He was held under $1 million bail.
The UPD expressed gratitude “to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority and Medstar for their assistance with this investigation.”
