Hollyoaks Nicole Barber-Lane on Why the McQueens Still Resonate

For more than twenty years, Myra McQueen (Nicole Barber-Lane) has served as the matriarch of the McQueen family on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks. With her on-screen son John Paul (James Sutton) set to leave the soap, the series is marking the family’s legacy in style, with Barber-Lane once again at the center.

Hollyoaks will air a special “What If” episode next week, exploring John Paul’s life and imagining how things might have unfolded if key members of the McQueen family were still alive.

Reflecting on Myra’s mindset during the special episode, Barber-Lane said, “Myra’s always on a mission to make sure everybody is ok and safe, whatever country she is in.”

Barber-Lane added that filming the “What If” episode was a joy. “It was so much fun,” she shared. “I think it reflects what can happen in life and the fun we can have being in a soap, especially with some of the McQueens being back on set, it was just great energy.”

Discussing Myra’s bond with John-Paul, Barber-Lane said, “Myra completely dotes on John Paul and their relationship is so close. Such a beautiful bond, it’s very special.”

Barber-Lane believes the McQueens continue to resonate with viewers because of the love at the heart of the family. “No matter what they go through, how much they fall out, they have always got each other’s backs. That reflects real life. Sometimes family aren’t the easiest to deal with, but you’ve always got each other at the end of the day,” she said.

Reflecting on Myra’s evolution as a parent, Barber-Lane noted that her approach ahas softened over time, “Myra steps in when necessary, instead of being the lioness protecting everyone with her large roar,” she explained. “She’s now much calmer.”

The “What If” episode will also see the return of several familiar faces from Hollyoaks’ past, including David Tag, Gemma Merna, Hollie-Jay Bowes, Leah Hacket and Annie Wallace.

Reflecting on what it was like to work with them once again, Barber-Lane shared, “I honestly had an absolute ball. I was really giddy to have them back; it is just wonderful.”

Looking back on her time as a McQueen, Barber-Lane recalled some of her favorite memories, “Chippy teas, all the girls talking at once and John Paul just being in the middle of it all. Myra loving being with her family. They are the best McQueen memories I have.”

Asked which McQueen she relates to most, Barber-Lane joked, “I’ve probably been like every single McQueen at some point in my life.”

Barber-Lane added that being part of the McQueen family has been deeply meaningful. “Being a McQueen has meant I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people in the industry,” she said. “Cast, directors, behind the scenes producers, writers, right across the board. I feel so lucky and so privileged for that honour and to be a part of the McQueen family – what an absolutely amazing claim to fame for me.”
