Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade has announced his retirement from the Big Bash League, ending a 15-year career in the tournament. “‘Wadey’ is one of those cricketers you always wanted on your side,” Vaughan said. “He competed incredibly hard every time he walked onto the field and had the ability to change a game very quickly, but equally important has been what he has passed on to the players around him.
“He has a fantastic cricket brain and has always been willing to share his knowledge and challenge those around him to get better. There are a lot of players within our system who have benefited from playing alongside Matt and I think that will be a significant part of his legacy here.”
Matthew Wade Completes 15-Year Big Bash Journey Across Three Teams
Matthew Wade began his BBL career with Melbourne Stars during the inaugural 2011-12 season, playing alongside Shane Warne in the team’s first match against Sydney Thunder. He spent three seasons with the Stars before moving to the Melbourne Renegades in the fourth edition of the BBL.
The Tasmania-born batter then returned to his home state in 2017, joining the Hobart Hurricanes. He went on to spend nine seasons with the franchise and became a central figure in their first BBL title-winning campaign.
In 119 BBL matches for the Stars, Renegades, and Hurricanes, Wade scored 2,978 runs at an average of 30.38 and a strike rate of 142.35, including 19 fifties and one century.
Wade also made a significant impact with the gloves, completing 70 dismissals in the competition. He finishes fifth among BBL wicketkeepers in dismissals, behind Josh Philippe, Josh Inglis, Jimmy Peirson, and Sam Harper.
