Tennis legend Monica Seles is back in the gym as she navigates life with myasthenia gravis.
The nine-time Grand Slam champion, 52, who was attacked with a boning knife during a quarterfinal match at the Citizen Cup in 1993, has faced plenty of obstacles throughout her lengthy athletic career. In addition to the devastating physical and mental effects of the attack, Seles has faced significant challenges since being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in 2022. While she officially retired from tennis in 2008, the seasoned athlete is working hard to stay positive and keep herself healthy. Over the weekend, Seles shared a photo from the gym that explained she's getting back into the wellness groove.
"I’m a little late on my New Year’s resolution, but I’m reminding myself to be kind and to embrace the idea that it’s better to start late than not at all," shared Seles, along with a photo of herself in workout clothes holding an inflatable ball in the gym.

While Seles doesn't speak extensively about her 1993 attack "because it takes me back to a very dark place in my life," she has shared how devastating it was. Gunther Parche, an obsessed Steffi Graf fan, stabbed her in the shoulder, shocking the crowd as onlookers pulled him off Seles. But the worst part was that the tennis court, which she knew as her safe space, was taken away from her.
"I had grown up on a tennis court - it was where I felt most safe, most secure - and that day in Hamburg, everything was taken away from me. My innocence. My rankings, all my income, endorsements - they were all cancelled. And the one person who could have comforted me really, who understood what it meant, my father, was of course facing this awful illness," she told the Guardian in 2009. (Her father died in 1998.)
After years hard work, Seles triumphed and made her way back to the court.
Living with Myasthenia Gravis
In 2022, Seles was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune condition. She went public with her diagnosis in 2025, sharing that she knew something was wrong when she "started experiencing symptoms like extreme leg weakness, arm weakness, and double vision.
So I realized, 'This is very unusual,'" she said. "Once I was diagnosed, it was like a relief, but also it was a challenge. Even coming here today -- in the old days, traveling would be a no-brainer. Now I had to get packing tips. I had to learn a new way to live with MG," she told ABC News.
Here's a look at Seles speaking about her life with the condition.
