‘Mandalorian and Grogu’ Super Bowl Spot Revives a Star Wars Classic

Anybody of a certain age remembers the classic Budweiser Clydesdale ads: slow-motion shots of the horses pulling a sleigh, close-ups of steaming breath and stomping hooves, maybe even a child patting a snout.

Well, Disney just captured that feel in a new Super Bowl spot for The Mandalorian & Grogu, Instead of horses, the 30-second clip features the duo aboard a sleigh pulled by four classic tauntauns from The Empire Strikes Back, moving across a snowy landscape.

The spot is narrated by Sam Elliott, whose gravely voice adds an interesting (and even overly-serious) tone. 'Sometimes we choose our path, other times the path chooses us,' Elliott says in voice-over narration. 'Through it all, we keep pushing forward, driven by a deeper purpose, guided by an unseen force. The journey never gets any easier, the bond just gets harder to break. This is the way.'

Unlike other anticipated Mando trailers, the spot does not include familiar cameos from characters like Zeb or Rotta the Hutt. Instead, it centers solely on the core duo riding together.

The Super Bowl spot builds on a previously released full trailer, which offered additional glimpses of the film’s setting and scope. The earlier trailer showed Din Djarin navigating snowy terrain and other landscapes, battling with giant AT-ATs, and apparently struggling with warriors in a gladiator pit. Fans were treated to a glimpse of a live-action Garazeb Orrelios, commonly known as Zeb, a male Lasat from the Star Wars: Rebelsanimated series. A creature that looked suspiciously like shadowy Amanaman from Jabba's palace in Return of the Jedi peeked out from an underground pool. There was even a reappearance of Djarin's beloved Razorcrest, which was destroyed in the show.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce. Pedro Pascal reprises his role as the Mandalorian, and Jeremy Allen White joins the cast, along with Sigourney Weaver. Ludwig Göransson returns as composer.

The film is set for a Memorial Day weekend release and expands on the success of the Emmy-winning Disney+ series. The show helped establish Disney+ as a major streaming platform, achieving top-tier viewership early in its run. Its first season logged over 5.3 billion U.S. minutes viewed and Season 2 reached about 8.3 billion minutes during their initial Disney+ runs. It also was one of the first Disney+ originals to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming list and at one point amassed over 1.1 billion minutes watched in a single week during Season 3.

Despite the massive success and scale of the show, the focus of the new spot is one important detail: as Din Djarin and Grogu face new challenges together their bond remains unshakable. It must be unshakeable to tolerate riding behind four tauntauns which, if we can believe Han Solo, cannot be the most delightful smell in the galaxy.
