The National Council for Women (NCW) announced its categorical rejection of any work that incites and encourages abuse against women, diminishes their dignity, or perpetuates negative stereotypes that undermine their status and fundamental role in society.
This statement follows in the wake of controversy leveled against Ramez Galal over his treatment of Asmaa Galal as a guest on his latest show.
The NCW affirmed that the dignity of Egyptian women is a red line that must not be crossed or compromised.
It stressed that protecting women in the public sphere is not merely an institutional commitment, but a national and moral duty that reflects society’s respect for its values, principles, and cultural identity.
The NCW assured it valued freedom of creativity and expression, yet simultaneously emphasized that this freedom must wielded responsibly, without infringing upon other rights and freedoms – foremost being dignity.
It must also not incite, directly or indirectly, violence, hatred, or denigration of different groups.
Taking a stand
The Council affirms that any content promoting socially unacceptable practices, or inciting discrimination, denigration, or verbal or psychological violence against women is a clear violation of the Constitution and its established principles, which guarantee equality and non-discrimination and safeguard the dignity of all citizens.
The Council’s Media Observatory continues its role in monitoring and analyzing the portrayal of women in various media outlets and documenting any practices or discourse that involve abuse or discrimination, in preparation for taking the necessary measures in coordination with the relevant authorities.
Therefore, the NCW urges media institutions and production companies to adhere to the Media Code of Ethics and the Media Code for Women, and to establish a professional media discourse that reflects the true image of Egyptian women as integral partners in building the nation and shaping its future.
The Council affirms its firm and decisive stance and will take all necessary measures against any content proven to violate or breach professional standards and established societal values.
