A New Luxury Sleeper Train Offers an Unexpected Way to Experience the Desert

Train travel is having a bit of a comeback moment. The iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is launching its first-ever Paris–to–Amalfi Coast journey, while Geographic Expeditions has announced a 22-day rail trip tracing the ancient Silk Road from China to Uzbekistan. And one new journey is leaning fully into the romance of slowing down.

Late this year, Saudi Arabia will debut Dream of the Desert, its first-ever luxury sleeper train. Designed to make the journey just as memorable as where you’re headed, the train offers an old-school rail experience through sweeping desert landscapes—complete with private suites, destination dining and plenty of time to simply watch the scenery roll by.

Instead of rushing from point A to point B, Dream of the Desert is all about easing into the trip. The train carries just 66 guests, spread across 33 suite cabins in 14 carriages, creating a more intimate, unhurried feel. Onboard, there are two restaurant cars and a majlis-inspired lounge—a relaxed, living-room-style space meant for quiet conversation, lingering tea and long looks out the window as the desert stretches on.

The interiors feel warm and inviting rather than flashy. Designed by architect and interior designer Aline Asmar d’Amman, the spaces draw from Saudi traditions and the surrounding landscape, with rich woods, woven textures and earthy tones accented by softer pops of lavender, oasis green and burnt orange. Even the train itself reflects a thoughtful approach: the Italian-built carriages were refitted rather than replaced, giving them new life instead of starting from scratch.

Food plays a big role in the experience. One restaurant focuses on Saudi flavors and regional ingredients, while the other blends Italian techniques with global influences. All meals are included, along with curated onboard programming and guided excursions when the train stops along its route.

Much of the magic happens beyond the windows, with sweeping desert scenery and visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the way. There are five itineraries planned, running mostly between October and May. Some are shorter, like a two-day round trip from Riyadh to prehistoric rock art sites near Jubbah. Others head farther north to places like AlUla, with select journeys adding off-train stays, desert camps and hosted outdoor meals. with suhoor (the pre-dawn meal), iftar (the evening meal that breaks the fast) and stargazing, as well as a summer option designed to take place entirely onboard.

At its core, Dream of the Desert offers a different way to travel—one that’s less about checking boxes and more about taking your time. It’s an invitation to sit back, settle in, and let the desert set the pace.
