Police were searching Sunday for a hit-and-run driver after a 14-year-old boy died in a Saturday night crash, according to Thornton investigators.
Thornton officers responded to the crash near Huron Street and West Thornton Parkway just before 9:45 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the agency.
A 14-year-old boy riding a small motorized bike north on Huron Street was hit from behind near the intersection, police said. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene without stopping, according to the release.
The driver of a 2013 BMW 328i with Colorado license plate FBWX60 is believed to have hit the boy, according to an alert from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The license plate is black, and the car likely has front-end damage from the crash, investigators said in the alert.
Paramedics took the teenager to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Adams County Coroner’s Office will identify the 14-year-old at a later time.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird said in a statement. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion.”
