Gymnastics takes second loss of season to Oklahoma

No. 4 Alabama gymnastics lost to No. 1 Oklahoma 197.475-198.2 on the road Friday night.

“A theme for our team has been progress, not perfection,” head coach Ashley Johnston said. “I think this team showed that they can dig in and fight and continue to chip away, even when the stakes are high.”

    Rotation 1

As the away team, Alabama started out on the uneven bars, meaning Oklahoma was on the vault.

After the first rotation, Alabama had a score of 49.375 and Oklahoma posted a 49.525. This was Alabama’s lowest uneven bars score for this season. A lower score could be due to some missed stuck landings.

For the Crimson Tide, junior Chloe LaCoursiere posted a 9.925 to mark Alabama’s highest uneven bars score. LaCoursiere shared the title with Oklahoma’s Lily Pederson, Ella Murphy, and Mackenzie Estep.

    Rotation 2

For the second rotation, Alabama was on the vault and Oklahoma was on the uneven bars. On the vault, Alabama posted a 49.35 to bring its total score to 98.725. Oklahoma posted a 49.575 on the uneven bars to bring its total to 99.1.

On the vault, Alabama freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar posted the Crimson Tide’s highest score, a 9.95. However, this did not land her the title. Oklahoma’s Addison Fatta made a 9.975.

“It’s so cool to see Aza have that breakout moment on vault,” Johnston said. “It turns out that when you stay process focused, that really sets you up to do your best in the right moments.”

    Rotation 3

Alabama was slightly trailing after two rotations, and was heading to the floor for the third rotation. The Crimson Tide’s floor lineup has proven to be strong this year, and Alabama needed to keep that up Friday night.

Alabama made a 49.525 on the floor to bring its total to 148.25. On the balance beam, the Sooners made a score of 49.525 to bring its total score to 148.625.

The Crimson Tide’s highest scorer was Ra-Akbar with a 9.95. The floor title went to Ra-Akbar and Oklahoma’s Fatta.

    Rotation 4

For the final rotation, Alabama was on the balance beam and Oklahoma was on the floor. Alabama made a 49.225 and Oklahoma made a 49.575.

On the balance beam, senior Gabby Gladieux suffered a fall and posted a 9.225. Alabama’s highest score was a 9.925 from sophomore Kylee Kvamme.

“I think we’re in this really critical time period,” Johnston said. “To be excellent, to be the best in the country, we’ve got to find two more tenths, three more tenths on every event. … I know this team’s going to come in and be relentless about how they get after that.”

One of the judges gave sophomore Ryan Fuller’s balance beam start value a 9.9. A lower start value means the judge thinks that Fuller missed an element of her routine. After the meet, there was an inquiry about this scoring decision. Fuller’s original score was a 9.775 and was changed to a 9.8 after inquiry.

The balance beam title went to Oklahoma’s Faith Torrez who posted a 9.975. Oklahoma’s Fatta was the all-around winner with a score of 39.725.
