“Mr. and Mrs. America,” Madison Chock and Evan Bates, have done it again.
The power couple and dynamic ice dancing duo proved their status as gold medal favorites in the team figure skating ice dance free skate with yet another dominant performance.
The husband-and-wife skating team lifted the U.S. in a pivotal moment Saturday, with only a few skates left before the team medals are handed out.
Their stellar performance earned them a season-best score of 133.23, more than 10 points above the second-place finish.
“They put on a show and it was just wonderful to see that performance,” said commentator Johnny Weir, who called it “absolutely spellbinding,” “regal” and “majestic.”
Thanks to their brilliant free skate, along with a second-place finish from skating phenom Ilia Malinin, the U.S. ended the day with 44 points. Japan was five points back going into the men’s, women’s and pairs free skates to decide the medals Sunday.
The two are already gold medalists, being the only returning members of the U.S. figure skating team that won gold in Beijing, but this year, they’re going for something they’ve yet to achieve: individual gold.
“They’re not to be beaten,” host and Olympic figure skating legend Scott Hamilton said after Saturday’s performance.
