(Guest opinion) Dr. Bob Stewart: Current events echo the American Revolution

I recently listened to a Zoom meeting about revolutionary patriot Thomas Paine and was reminded of how similar our situation is now to what it was during the American Revolution. We renounced a king then and are battling someone who wants to be king and acts like one now. As Thomas Paine said, “These are the times that try men’s souls.  … Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.”

National paramilitary troops are invading American cities. The administration calls for de-escalation and an end to violence when their legions are the ones killing citizens. According to The Guardian, six people died while in ICE custody in January 2026 alone. The murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti on the streets of Minneapolis are even more egregious. The servility of some legislators and national leaders is almost as distressing as the murders. Again, Thomas Paine said it well, “There are persons, too, who see not the full extent of the evil which threatens them; they solace themselves with hopes that the enemy, if he succeed, will be merciful. It is the madness of folly, to expect mercy from those who have refused to do justice; and even mercy, where conquest is the object, is only a trick of war; the cunning of the fox is as murderous as the violence of the wolf, and we ought to guard equally against both.”

Paine also made the point that peace now is not as important as peace for our children. Paine said, “If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.” We must have the courage to stand against threats to American democracy before it is too late to recover our national principles. Paine wrote at a time when American Patriots had been defeated repeatedly and were on the brink of losing the Revolutionary War. Victory against an oligarchy was seriously in doubt.

Our current situation also seems very bleak. We continue to experience violent rhetoric and actions against legislators and politicians, judges, citizen protestors, news reporters, immigrants, universities and colleges, international allies, and, in fact, anyone who criticizes or disagrees with Donald Trump. Also, Trump has praised and emboldened extremists and even pardoned friends, donors and allies who were tried and convicted of violence against America, of dealing drugs or guns, or of engaging in corruption, fraud, insider trading, or tax evasion. The U.S. Constitution and federal laws are being dishonored. I don’t think we have ever faced a greater threat from within our nation.

Thomas Paine wrote when it was not all certain that America would win the Revolutionary War. It was only the persistent dedication of American patriots that proved that the most powerful army in the world could not defeat a populous determined to be free of tyranny. The government concept they fought for was based on rule by law rather than the whims of a single authoritarian dictator. The constitutional democratic republic they created, while not perfect, is still evolving into the best form of government ever devised. But it must be defended.

We must all resist the overrunning of our nation by a despot. We owe it to our patriot founders who sacrificed so much for the concept of freedom from autocracy. We also owe it to ourselves and our descendants. As Benjamin Franklin said, our Constitution gave us “a republic, if you can keep it.” What can you do to keep it?
