First Alert Weather: Tracking snow and dangerous cold

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – If you’ve had your fill of winter, we’ve got some bad news. We have a Yellow Alert for Saturday as the coldest air of the season moves in tonight and leaves us in the single digits all weekend. Widespread snow showers today and lake effect snow this weekend will also dump up to half a foot of snow or more in some areas.

Today will be once again colder than normal. Our highs will be in the mid 20s, and snow showers will enter the region late this morning or early this afternoon and last into the night, leaving only a few inches of accumulation at most. The lake snow off of Lake Ontario will bring in additional snow this weekend.

Tonight an arctic front will blast us with dangerously cold wind chills. Tomorrow temperatures in the single digits and wind gusts up to 35 MPH will create minimum wind chills ranging from -20 to -25… But we are closely monitoring the possibility that wind chills could get even lower than that. Either way, frostbite and hypothermia are real risks. Please limit your time outdoors, and cover all exposed skin. If you feel numbness in your fingers, ears, nose, or other exposed areas, or exhibit any signs of hypothermia such as confusion, sleepiness, difficulty speaking, and muscle stiffness, get inside immediately and warm up gradually. Don’t forget to bring your pets inside too.

Lake effect snow off of Lake Ontario will continue all day Saturday. By Sunday morning, areas close to the lakeshore will have at least half a foot of fresh snowfall. Some areas along the lakeshore where snow showers are more persistent will have locally higher amounts.

Sunday’s temperatures will be similar to Saturday’s, but the difference is the wind will be much calmer. Wind chill values will go back up to manageable levels. Temperatures climb back into the teens for Monday and 20s for Tuesday. By next weekend, temperatures have a good chance to finally reach 30 degrees and perhaps even ABOVE NORMAL! Be careful what you wish for though; there are signs that more active weather will be coming alongside that change in temperature.

Stay tuned for updates on the forecast.
