A 17-year-old faces felony charges after Cook County prosecutors said he shot seven teens the night of Chicago’s tree lighting ceremony in November.
Damaurion Cherry, 17, was charged with seven felony counts of first-degree attempted murder, seven felony counts of aggravated battery, and seven felony counts of discharging a firearm in the shooting that sent people fleeing for their lives in downtown Chicago.
Surveillance video shows a chaotic scene outside the Chicago Theatre on North State Street on Nov. 21. In court Thursday, prosecutors said two groups of teens were talking, and it ended with seven people shot, ranging in age from 13 to 17.
The victims were a 13-year-old female, a 14-year-old female, two 14-year-old males, a 15-year-old male, a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old male.
Court documents said later that night, Cherry also robbed someone at gunpoint in the Roseland neighborhood. He was already on probation for a robbery last summer, according to prosecutors.
“This is a clear escalation of extremely violent and dangerous behavior,” Judge John Hock said in court Thursday before ordering Cherry detained.
The same night, a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot and an 18-year-old man was shot in the leg and hospitalized in serious condition. Cherry was not charged in those crimes.
Prosecutors also said because of his age, it was illegal for Cherry to have the gun. In court, they focused heavily on the clothes he was wearing, including a distinctive jacket, a hoodie, sneakers and a backpack. He was also wearing a face mask for some of the evening.
Court documents said some of the victims identified him as the shooter because of the jacket he was wearing, while others didn’t see the shooter at all.
Cherry’s public defender argued other teens had on similar jackets and said Cherry maintains his innocence.
Two months after the tree lighting, prosecutors said Cherry was shot in the chest. He was arrested Wednesday after he finished his hospital stay.
Cherry is due back in court Feb. 25.
