So many sports writing layoffs this week, across multiple publications. It stings to see it happening, both as someone in the field and also as someone who just enjoys reading good work. I hate that it feels like we’re supposed to just say “welp, it’s a tough industry” and move on. Our little world is worse off for the losses, and I hope we can collectively find some footing in the years ahead.
In the meantime, I’m very grateful that I get to do what I do here (our owners, Betsperts, are quite awesome in that regard), and I’m very grateful that you’re here reading it and supporting us.
Imagine telling back-to-back Cy Young award winner and model citizen Tarik Skubal who bleeds Detroit blue that you're planning on slandering him in court so you can pay him $19M instead of $32 million, but have no problem with paying Framber Valdez $38M a year over three years.
— Jared Carrabis (@Jared_Carrabis) February 5, 2026 The Tigers absolutely should’ve offered Skubal more for his final year of control and avoided yesterday’s arbitration hearing. No question. But once it got to that point, of course they were going to go low and try to win the case, the number for which is wholly divorced from free agent prices. Besides, it’s not like they’re re-signing Skubal long-term anyway (dear God, can you imagine the deal he’s going to get?), so might as well try to win that case and also bring in Framber Valdez to try to max out 2026. One important note about the contract structure: Valdez did NOT get an opt-out after the first year, only after the second. That’s key, because clubs hate to give it after the first year if at all possible to avoid (especially for a qualified free agent who costs draft pick compensation), and now someone like Zac Gallen couldn’t just point to Valdez’s deal and say, see, he got the one-year opt-out, so I should, too. Instead, it’s pretty easy for teams to say, hey, even Valdez couldn’t get a one-year opt-out on a three-year deal right now. Gallen won’t get anywhere close to the money Valdez just got, but I do wonder if he might be looking at that same structure now (unless he returns to Arizona, where there is no draft pick cost, and he might get a one-year deal or one-year opt-out – local folks still think it’s possible). The Orioles, by not getting Valdez, probably now become the most likely landing spot for Gallen, who may not ultimately fall into the Cubs’ lap after all. Get ready for more movement in the pitching market now that Valdez is settled and the Skubal decision is about to drop. I expect a half-dozen additional signings around baseball between now and the spring reporting dates that kick in next Wednesday. I wonder whether the Pirates, having been rumored on Valdez (I knew that was just the final nudge for some other team, turns out it was) will now try to turn to a Gallen or a Zack Littell or a Lucas Giolito or whoever, or if that was just a particular swing at Valdez. Some really interesting thoughts from Shota Imanaga about his hamstring strain last year, a first for him in his career:This is a summary of yesterday’s Shōta podcast. He talks about the real situation when he suffered a thigh muscle strain, and what he learned from that experience. It is very powerful and memorable. @Cubs #GoCubsGo #BeHereForIt #FlyTheW #今永SHOTAISM t.co/rUxwm5iO1m pic.twitter.com/Viu9OE3PRx
— CubbyMike?? (@CubbyMike76) February 4, 2026 Say what you will about the Cubs’ 2020-22 era sell-off, but at least they got some talent in return. This has been a Bulls Bullet. (And since I know I’ll get the question, because a lot of people asked when I sent that thought out on X and Bluesky, the returns during that period for the Cubs weren’t overwhelming – they tend not to be when you’re mostly selling off short-term pieces and contracts – but it’s also not nothing. Pete Crow-Armstrong was an outsized return. Kevin Alcantara is still a guy I believe in. Ben Brown. Daniel Palencia. And don’t forget Owen Caissie, who turned into Edward Cabrera.
