‘Somebody is always here’; Seneca Park Zoo leaders explain how they protect animals from winter weather

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Temperatures have been brutal this winter. While polar bears may love this winter weather, how about other animals at Seneca Park Zoo? News10NBC’s Kristi Blake visited to see how they’re keeping animals safe.

Randi Krieger, a zoologist, said some animals are thriving in the snow. “Our polar bears are definitely out, loving the snow right now,” Krieger said. “The otters are out quite a bit in the snow too. They’re having a good time. Our Canada lynx are having a whole bunch of fun rolling around and playing with each other in the snow. And their snow leopards also really dig when it’s this cold out.”

Even some animals that are native to warmer climates seem to be enjoying the weather. Brenna DeAngelis, a zookeeper, explained, “Some of the African animals, like the elephants, can come out in the snow. A rhino absolutely loves playing out in the snow. He runs and has the zoomies around his yard.”

Richard Mikiciuk, the assistant zoo director, said staff members are always at the zoo to monitor the health and safety of animals.

“From both the animal care side and the facility side, we’re called essential. So we still have to come in and perform our duties,” Mikiciuk said. “Somebody is always here, depending on the amount of snowfall, it’s going to depend on how much staff you have to rotate.”

DeAngelis also mentioned the importance of maintaining the animals’ environments. “We’re clearing out snow and just making sure they can access the different areas of their yard,” she said. “And when they have indoor access as well, making sure they can come in and get out of the cold if they want to.”

The lions have heated rocks to keep them comfortable, and for visitors, workers shovel snow, break up ice, and spread salt. Mikiciuk added, “The plowing, the shoveling, snow blowers. We have smaller equipment and bigger equipment.”

Ultimately, when it’s brutally cold, all animals have the option to go inside for shelter. Most of the work to keep animals safe is done before visitors even arrive.
