Savannah Guthrie is going through an unthinkable tragedy as her mother, Nancy Guthrie, has gone missing and authorities believe the 84-year-old was abducted from her Arizona home.
As Savannah and her family, including her siblings Charles and Annie, continue to hope and pray that their mother is found safe, many are wondering about the patriarch of the family, Charles Guthrie.
Charles died suddenly in 1988 when Savannah was in high school.
Savannah has said that her father died of a heart attack when she was a senior.
"My father died when I was 16. I think about him all the time," Savannah told People magazine in 2024. "He was deep and complicated, and he didn't talk to us like little kids. He told us things that I didn't understand at the time but later would remember, long after he died."

“The loss of my father was shocking and devastating. It cracked open our family and crushed us," she continued. "He was our center. We just idealized him and adored him. He was larger than life, and funny, and charming, and adorable. His loss was so sudden and so shocking."
Savannah Has Spoken Highly of Her Father
It's no secret that Savannah looked up to her father. In an essay written for Today in 2014, she talked about some of his qualities and what she remembered most about him.
"My father was a seemingly unlikely mix of qualities: always strong, sometimes terrifying, loyal to the end, and disarmingly gentle and tender when it counted. He was also tall, affectionate and funny; he had that personality that people describe as “lighting up the room.” He was a 5,000-watt bulb who could turn a mundane trip to the post office into a rip-roaring tale. People adored him and gravitated towards him," she wrote.
"But for all these wonderful and magnetic traits, the one I remain most grateful for is his integrity. He had an unbending notion of right and wrong. His moral clarity was demanding and sometimes intimidating, but he tempered it, at the moment you most needed and least expected it, with kindness and mercy," she added.
When Savannah gave birth to her son, she named him Charley in honor of her dad.
Savannah and Her Sister Didn't Want Nancy to Be Alone

When the pandemic rolled around, it was particularly hard for Savannah, who didn't see her mom for well over a year.
