Day 16 of the Chicago Bears offseason. In quiet moments this time of year, I think about the only time I’ve ever seen my favorite team in the Super Bowl was at a Super Bowl party that I didn’t even really want to attend. I’m not sure what I’d do if the Bears made a Super Bowl now. But I know I wouldn’t go to a party I have no interest attending. And now, I’m wondering if people actually like Super Bowl parties.
It’s been a busy morning at BN Bears. We can begin with Chicago’s search for a new offensive coordinator. Arizona Cardinals Passing Game Coordinator Connor Senger reportedly receiving a request to be interviewed for the opening makes him the first official candidate on our radar. Senger is fresh off calling plays in the East-West Shrine Bowl and has recently interviewed for QB coach opportunities with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. It feels worth pointing out that Senger worked under former Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who is now the Detroit Lions’ offensive play-caller. Petzing is friends with Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. Sometimes, who you know can be as valuable as what you know. We’ll keep an eye out on Senger (and other OC candidates) for obvious reasons. Elsewhere, friend Matt Nagy found a new job as the New York Giants offensive coordinator. Nagy gets a chance to call plays for second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart and stud wide receiver Malik Nabers. I’m rooting for Nagy to figure it out because I love a good bounce-back story. With that being said, I find it a bit odd that the job he ultimately landed is one that still connects him to Andy Reid. Both Nagy and Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh were long-time Reid assistants. Again, this is a reminder that sometimes it is as much about who you know than what you know. Speaking of old friends making headlines, former Bears quarterback Justin Fields reportedly turned down an opportunity to be a Pro Bowl quarterback:One note before the Pro Bowl Games on Tuesday: #Jets QB Justin Fields was asked to participate, I’m told. A pair of Chicago sports media stories on very different ends of the emotional spectrum. Jeff Agrest (Sun-Times) writes about Kevin Kaduk’s departure from the ALLCITY Network. Many sports fans remember Kaduk from Yahoo’s “Big League Stew” column. But, more recently, Kaduk helped get CHGO off the ground. Kaduk is one of the great influences from my formative years as a writer when I was in my 20s. It was a bummer to read about his departure because guys like that deserve better. I hope someone provides him with the soft landing he deserves. On a brighter note, there was some Chicago sports media history made on Monday with 670 The Score flipping the switch to the FM dial. The Score, which is the radio home of the Cubs and Bulls, will still be simulcasted on the AM side. But their new home at 104.3 FM marks a new era for the station. As as long-time listener, former caller, and occasional guest, I marvel while thinking about how far this station has come since the days my uncle used to have me listen with him when the station was on 820 AM.
