Two men died in a fatal car crash early Sunday morning after eluding law enforcement, driving at high speeds, and striking a power pole near the intersection of Pheasant Crest Drive and Weld County Road 84, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.
Just after 4:15 a.m., an LCSO deputy noticed a vehicle with missing lights and license plate, which caused the deputy to turn around to conduct a traffic stop near East 57th Street and North Garfield Avenue in Loveland, a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office release stated. The driver sped away before the deputy could conduct the stop, the release added.
The deputy continued to pursue the vehicle with his lights and sirens, but the suspect continued to elude law enforcement at high speeds, up to 120 mph, for several miles while driving north on Interstate 25, the press release stated. The vehicle exited at Mountain Vista and began driving east on Vine Drive/Weld County 84.
The driver lost control of the vehicle near the intersection of Pheasant Crest Drive and Weld County Road 84, struck a power pole, and rolled, ejecting two men, according to the press release. One of the men was pronounced dead on scene, while the other was transported to a hospital, where he died.
The third occupant of the vehicle, a woman, was extricated and transported to a hospital, but the extent of her injuries were not shared in the release.
LCSO deputies never made contact with the vehicle, according to the release. The agency’s forensics unit and CRASH team, a group of officers trained in traffic fatality investigations, also responded to investigate the scene.
The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of both men at a later date.
