Brian Wilson Claimed This Doobie Brothers Song Scared the Hell Out of Him

Brian Wilson was so unnerved by one Doobie Brothers song that he once claimed it "scared the hell" out of him.

Speaking to Vogue about the 2021 documentary Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road, filmmaker Jason Fine revealed that Wilson made the claim during the film's production. He noted that Wilson’s admission was surprising.

Fine told the publication, "[The first time he interviewed Wilson] was at his house in Beverly Hills, and I was terrified. We sat down in his living room and talked for about 15 minutes, and it wasn’t going very well, and then he just bolted up and left."

"I didn’t really know what to do—there’s no one around; I vaguely hear a vacuum cleaner somewhere in the distance. What was I supposed to do now—leave? Wait? I stuck around for a little while and then just thought I’d look around and see if I could find him—and I found him in the kitchen peering into the refrigerator. And I said, “Brian—what happened?”

Wilson told Fine, “Oh—I’m sorry…I just got a little scared." When the filmmaker asked why, Wilson replied, "Well, sometimes things just scare me."

"You know that Doobie Brothers song ‘What a Fool Believes’? Scares the hell out of me.” Wilson did not elaborate on why the song had such a profound effect on him.

Despite Wilson's fear of that particular song, the Doobie Brothers lead singer and songwriter, Michael McDonald, was a fan of his work. However, Wilson and McDonald never collaborated.

In April 2023, McDonald performed a rendition of the Beach Boys' 1964 smash hit, "Don't Worry Baby," alongside Take 6 as part of A Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys. The special aired in 2023.

Wilson's official website shared McDonald's quotes about the Beach Boys' lasting impact on the music industry. He praised the band’s innovation and creativity, and noted their music continues to inspire artists and fans alike decades later.

McDonald stated, "One of America’s greatest musically imaginative eras was ushered in by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. It has endured over 60 years and will continue to capture our imaginations for at least a hundred more. Your songs are national treasures."

Michael McDonald is currently active with The Doobie Brothers, having released a new album, Walk This Road, in June 2025. Brian Wilson died on June 11, 2025. He was 82.
