Grammy awards stars take aim at Trump’s immigration crackdown

Stars at the Grammy awards have used their acceptance speeches and red carpet appearances to speak up for migrants and protest against Donald Trump’s brutal immigration crackdown.

“Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say ICE out,” Bad Bunny said after winning album of the year, referring to the acronym for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we’re humans and we are Americans … The only thing more powerful than hate is love so please we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love.”

“I want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland to follow their dreams,” he said, as he also made history for the first Spanish-language album to take the top prize.

Immigration became one of the main themes of the night.

‘I don’t recognise my country in this moment’

Billie Eilish, who won song of the year for “Wildflower”, added her voice to those criticising the government’s operations.

“No one is illegal on stolen land,” she said while accepting the award for the song from her 2024 album “Hit Me Hard and Soft.”

British pop singer Olivia Dean also called for immigrants to be celebrated after she won the best new artist gong at the awards.

“I never really imagined that I would be up here,” she said, receiving her first Grammy while wiping away tears.

“I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant. I wouldn’t be here … I am a product of bravery, and I think that those people deserve to be celebrated.”

Meanwhile Gloria Estefan said: “I’m scared. There are hundreds of children in detention centres. — I don’t recognise my country in this moment right now.”

Earlier in the night, singers Joni Mitchell and Kehlani, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon were among artists wearing “ICE out” and “Be Good” pins at the annual ceremony, held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Kehlani, 30, cursed ICE in her acceptance speech as she won her first Grammy for best R&B performance for Folded.

She said: “I hope everybody’s inspired to join together as a community of artists and speak out against what’s going on. F*** Ice.”

US singer Shaboozey accepted his award saying: “I want to thank my mother, who as of today, has retired from her job of 30 years — working as a registered nurse in a psych ward — as an immigrant in this country. Thank you, mum.

“Immigrants built this country, literally, actually. So, this for them,” he concluded. “Thank you for bring your culture, your music and your stories.”

Amy Allen, who won songwriter of the year, wore an “ICE Out” pin, an anti-immigration enforcement message. Rhiannon Giddens and Margo Price were also among the artists wearing the political pins.

ICE officers have been deployed in US cities as part of President Donald Trump’s mass deportation initiative, most notably in Minnesota and Minneapolis, where about 2,000 federal agents have been deployed.

Officers have come under strong criticism over their aggressive approach. Most recently, Ice agents fatally shot two people on the streets of Minneapolis: Renee Good on 7 January and Alex Pretti on 24 January.
