John Deacon, the longtime bassist and one of the four members of Queen’s classic lineup, celebrates his 75th birthday on Aug. 19. The musician was born in Leicester, England, in 1951 and became an essential part of the band that rose to worldwide fame during the 1970s.
Deacon’s quiet demeanor stood apart from the commanding stage presence of Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor, eventually earning him the nickname “The Quiet One.” His personality never limited his contributions, however, as both his bass playing and songwriting became important parts of Queen’s sound.
The musician began playing in bands as a teenager and studied electronics before joining Queen in 1971 at age 19. His musical ability and technical knowledge helped him secure the position, completing the lineup that would remain together for the next two decades.
Deacon went on to write several of the band’s most enduring songs, including “You’re My Best Friend,” “I Want to Break Free” and “Another One Bites the Dust.” The latter topped the U.S. charts for three weeks and earned Favorite Pop/Rock Single at the 1981 American Music Awards, while Deacon was later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003.
His accomplishments were also recognized alongside the rest of Queen when the group entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Although Deacon did not attend the ceremony, his name appears with Mercury, May and Taylor on the band’s official plaque.
Deacon largely withdrew from music following Mercury’s death in 1991. His final live appearance with Queen came in 1997 when the band performed “The Show Must Go On” with Elton John in Paris. Later that year, he joined May and Taylor to record “No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)” before retiring.
The bassist has remained private ever since, but he continues to have a say in major decisions involving Queen. “If we have any major decision, business-wise, it’s always run past John,” May explained. “He’s still very much part of Queen.”
At 75, Deacon’s work remains closely tied to the band’s legacy. His memorable bass lines and songwriting continue to reach new generations, ensuring that “The Quiet One” is still heard whenever Queen’s music plays.
