Water main break in suburban Dixmoor impacts more than half of its residents

Residents in suburban Dixmoor are dealing with a significant water main break that is impacting more than half the community.

According to Village President Fitzgerald Roberts, the main break occurred on 139th Street between Dixie Highway and Thornton Road on Sunday.

The 8-inch water main delivers water to the community, and more than half of the village’s residents and businesses are impacted by the break, Roberts said.

Crews are working to fix the issue, but there is no timetable for that repair work to take place.

The break is just the latest issue the village has faced with its water system. A main break on Thursday caused the temporary closure of two schools and led to low water pressure at numerous homes in the community. Crews were able to repair the main on Thursday, allowing school to resume the next day.

Dixmoor also had to deal with a series of water main breaks in January 2024, with more issues occurring in the spring of that year.

The village has been seeking funds to address its aging water system, and has received funds from the Illinois EPA and other governmental bodies, but issues continue to plague the community.
