Jon Sumrall is trying to gather as much input as he can before embarking on the quest to get Florida back to national prominence.
The former Tulane head coach who replaced the fired Billy Napier a few months ago knows that challenge will be steep in trying to get the Gators back to where they were when a guy named Urban Meyer roamed the sidelines in Gainesville.
Speaking of Meyer, Sumrall spoke to reporters on Friday about his dealings with the UF coaching legend who led the program to national titles in 2006 and 2008 during a stint in Gainesville that only lasted 6 years. That’s a lot of glory in not really a lot of time in one place, and Meyer also won another national title in 2014 at Ohio State.
Meyer knows what he’s doing, he’s one of the best to have ever done it, and Sumrall talked to those reporters about his chat with Meyer before taking the Florida job.
Sumrall relayed that Meyer told him, “I kind of feel like I’m talking to myself 20 years ago,” Jon Sumrall recalled.
“I was like, ‘Can you say that again?'” Sumrall said. “That was one of the coolest sideways compliments I’ve ever gotten.”
Whether Sumrall can accomplish what Meyer did in Gainesville is obviously another story, but those were pretty big words for Sumrall to hear from Meyer even before taking the UF job.
“The ultimate competitor, ridiculously detailed, super intense,” said Sumrall about Meyer. “Very, very blown away with how much he’s been open and willing to give me some feedback since I’ve been at Florida.”

He can’t be Meyer, but he can try to win in Gainesville like Meyer did.
