Authorities identified two people who were found dead after a two-story west suburban home was reduced to rubble by an explosion Thursday afternoon.
James Fitzmaurice Sr., 64, and Virgie Fitzmaurice, 62, were located in the debris left behind after a gas leak caused an Oswego house to explode, authorities said.
Officials with the Kendall County Coroner’s Office pronounced them both dead at the scene after their bodies were located around 1:30 a.m. Friday.
Oswego Fire Protection District crews first responded around 5 p.m. Thursday to a report for a home explosion with people trapped inside on the 200 block of Fox Chase Drive North.
Around 5:15 p.m., NBC Chicago Sky 5 helicopter reporter Mike Lorber spotted a massive cloud of smoke rising from Oswego while gathering footage of a separate fire at a commercial building in Joliet.
When firefighters arrived, they found a two-story, wood-frame house had collapsed and was completely engulfed in flames.
Neighbors said they saw embers fly through the air and felt and heard a loud boom when the explosion occurred.
Authorities said late Thursday that two people were unaccounted for in the explosion and later announced the Fitzmaurice’s were found after an extensive search.
Though authorities say their preliminary investigation suggests the explosion was the result of a gas leak, the exact cause has not yet been determined, officials said.
