Andrew invited Epstein to Buckingham Palace after financier’s child-sex conviction, emails show

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor invited Jeffrey Epstein to Buckingham Palace two years after the financier was convicted of sex crimes with a child, newly released documents suggest.

In an email exchange sent from an address linked to Andrew, the former Duke of York, in September 2010, he appeared to tell the paedophile “alternatively we should have dinner at Buckingham Palace and lots of privacy” after Epstein asked for “private time”.

Epstein pleaded guilty to charges of solicitating prostitution and soliciting prostitution from someone under the age of 18 in June 2008 and was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

The former prince has strongly denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

The emails were in a latest tranche of documents in the so-called Epstein files to be released by the US Department of Justice on Friday.

In another email exchange between Epstein and Andrew, dated to August 2010, Epstein appears to tell Andrew that he had “a friend who I think you might enjoy having dinner with”.

The reply from Andrew’s email address says he would be “delighted” to see her and asks Epstein to give her his contact details.

Documents also suggest Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving 20 years in prison for recruiting underage girls for the late financier, sent an email to Andrew with her condolences after the Queen Mother’s death in 2002.

In the message sent on 31 March 2002 to an email linked to the former prince, she said: “Sorry you had to rush home, and also under such sad circumstances.”

Maxwell also wrote in the email, which was among millions of files released today: “However much the passing was to be expected in one so old, it does not make it any less sad.

“She was wonderful, and I am happy that I managed to meet her and speak with her.“We shall reschedule. Love you. Gx.”

In the message sent to an address named The Invisible Man, which has been linked to Andrew, she also referred to the person as “sweat pea”.

In a response sent on 1 April, The Invisible Man said: “Got your message this morning. Sorry to have missed you yesterday I will ring later today to chat”.

The email was signed “A xxx.”

Another email exchange appeared to show Maxwell agreeing that “Andrew” should choose to spend time with his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, and “the kids”.

Andrew and Sarah have two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. An email in August 2002 signed “A” and sent from the account named The Invisible Man read: “As the planning is getting more difficult over the bank holiday weekend here I am thinking now I might join Sarah and the kids in Sotogrande for a few days which would be very important and a good thing for the girls, rather than trek across the pond.

“Please will you give me permission to do so and I am conscious of the “better offer” syndrome but in this case it wouldn’t be that… I think!”

In her reply dated 24 August 2002, Maxwell said: “Andrew sweet heart – I fully understand if you want to spend time w/Sarah and the kids. I will not be remotely offended – sad not to spend time w/you and sad not to see you but at this point w/precious holidays and few days off I agree that this idea of coming to the Island looks less appealing.”

In a follow-up email sent on 25 August 2002 after The Invisible Man confirmed he would not be coming, Maxwell said: “No problem, [redacted], who is now coming and 5 other stunning red heads will all just have to play with ourselves.”

In a reply on 27 August, The Invisible Man said: “Look forward to catching up with you before you disappear to some exotic place and please don’t catch anything nasty on your travels!

“Masses of love and thanks, A xxx”.

In other emails, Ferguson appears to call Epstein her “dear spectacular and special friend”, “a legend”. In another sent on 3 August 2009 she thanks him for being “the brother I have always wished for”.

She was dropped as a patron for several charities last year after an email from 2011 was published in which she called Epstein her “supreme friend” and seemed to apologise for her public criticism of him.

Ferguson has not been accused of wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

Epstein died by suicide on 10 August 2019, while in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York while he was awaiting trial on federal charges for sex trafficking of minors.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s representatives have been contacted for comment.

On Friday Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, said the latest release of files marked the end of the Trump administration’s planned releases under the law.

The new cache includes more than three million pages, 2000 videos, and 180,000 images, he said. The files include extensive redactions, he added, to avoid identifying information of victims or materials related to active investigations.

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna asked why the department had only released about half of the over six million potential pages in the files.

“Failing to release these files only shields the powerful individuals who were involved and hurts the public’s trust in our institutions,” Khanna wrote in a statement released today.
