Lindsey Vonn Addresses Olympic Future After Hospitalization

Will Lindsey Vonn compete in the Winter Olympics?

The 41-year-old professional skier was set to make her Olympic comeback next month. However, on Friday, Jan. 30, she was taken to the hospital for evaluation after crashing during a World Cup downhill race in Switzerland.

According to her coach Aksel Lund Svindal, the crash occurred when Vonn lost control after landing a jump in difficult weather conditions and slammed into the safety net. She was able to get up and ski to the finish line, but she appeared to be in pain and was seen limping and clutching her left knee. Vonn was later airlifted to a nearby hospital to get checked out.

Following news of her accident, fans immediately began wondering if Vonn would still be able to compete at the upcoming Olympics. Her first event, the women’s downhill, is scheduled for Feb. 8. She's also slated to compete in the super-G and the team combined event.

Later on Jan. 30, Vonn took to Instagram to reassure fans she still has every intention of competing.

"I crashed today in the Downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee. I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams," Vonn wrote.

"This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback," she continued. "My Olympic dream is not over. Thank you for all of the love and support. I will give more information when I have it. Thank you to all the medical staff who helped me today. I am grateful for all the incredible help I received."

"Sending my best to Marte [Monsen] who also had a major crash and injury today. ??❤️‍?," she concluded. "It's not over until it's over...❤️??."

The race Vonn competed in was canceled shortly after her accident, as three of the first six racers also crashed due to the weather conditions and limited visibility.

Since late 2024, Vonn has been pursuing a comeback with the goal of competing at the Milan-Cortina Olympics. Prior to her crash, she had scored five podium finishes in downhills this season and was the leader of the World Cup standings going into the race on Jan. 30.

If Vonn is able to compete next week, it would not be the first time she has overcame a significant injury. Throughout her career, she's battled multiple knee injuries, torn ligaments, and has undergone at least nine surgeries.
