Family of drowned child in Giza says trainer killed him

The aunt of a seven-year-old boy who drowned about a week ago during a training session at a swimming pool in a club in Badrashin area of Giza Governorate, said that the boy, named Rahim, had suffered abuse and was deliberately drowned.

The family also directly accused the club’s chairman of gross negligence, while the Criminal Investigation Department continued its intensive investigations to complete the case file and ensure justice.

The aunt, Yosra, indicated that the child’s mother had previously warned the supervisor in charge of swimming at the club, expressing her concerns and her desire to cancel the training session if the abusive trainer, named Saif, was to train her son.

She asserted that he deliberately submerged children under water for extended periods, preventing them from breathing, as a form of inhumane punishment.

Yosra added that despite explicit warnings and testimonies from other children corroborating the mother’s account, the supervisor completely ignored the complaint and forced the family to hand the child over to the trainer.

During the training, the trainer repeatedly and harshly reprimanded the child, Rahim, and submerged him in the water. Despite the child’s father’s intervention to protest this dangerous behavior, the trainer continued, claiming he “knew what he was doing.”

The aunt said that Rahim was submerged three times consecutively until he was pulled from the swimming pool lifeless, with no hope of resuscitation.

Yosra continued that in an attempt to evade responsibility, the three defendants (the trainer, the supervisor, and the manager of the academy that rented the bathroom) claimed that the child had pre-existing heart problems that led to his death.

The family completely refuted these claims and submitted official medical documents to the prosecution proving the child was in perfect health before the incident.

The South Giza Prosecution Office launched an investigation, reviewing surveillance camera footage that corroborated the parents’ statements and perfectly matched the recorded incident, according to Yosra.

The investigation revealed that the  academy was operating without an official license, the trainer lacked any qualifications or a coaching license, and there was a complete absence of first aid equipment and supplies at the club.

Consequently, the Public Prosecution ordered the detention of the three defendants for four days pending further investigation on charges of causing the child’s death.
