Heavy delays and backups were expected during the Friday morning rush hour commute after two separate crashes blocked lanes on both I-290 and I-294.
“Major problems on the Ike and the Stevenson,” NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said, about 6:30 a.m.
About 5:20 a.m., a three-unit rollover crash involving a box truck closed all lanes on I-290 westbound near 25th Avenue in Bellwood, the Illinois State Police said. In the 6 a.m. hour, one lane had re-opened, but traffic and backups remained.
A fuel spill and clean-up from the rolled-over box truck was possible, Martin added, with an inbound gapers delay building.
Injuries were reported, ISP said, and some were transported to nearby hospitals. As of 7 a.m. the incident remained ongoing.
“Drivers should bail out at Harlem and take Roosevelt West,” Martin said.
Another Friday morning crash was causing heavy backups in Hazel Crest on southbound I-294 at Halstead, Martin said, with three of four lanes blocked and two rigs on scene.
Traffic was snarled even more Friday morning in the area, with a secondary crash at the Dixie Highway exit approaching the site, Martin said. As of 7 a.m., traffic cameras from the area showed brake lights and heavy backups.
