ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We have a Yellow Alert today for lake effect snow, bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Many in the region are starting out in the negatives, and high temperatures will only be in the upper single digits. Some lake snow is also likely today near the lakeshore with a trace to 3 inches possible. More lake snow tonight through Saturday A.M. could leave up to 6 inches in the spots with the most persistent snow showers.
Dress for the cold today: Several (non-cotton) layers with at least one insulating, and a windbreaker for the outer layer. Also be sure to wear a hat and gloves. Exposed skin is at risk of frostbite within 30 minutes near Rochester; 15-20 minutes down near the Finger Lakes.
Be careful on the road as snow will cause slippery conditions in spots and reduced visibility may also be a concern. It’s lake effect, which means conditions can change quickly.
Bitterly cold temperatures continue through the weekend and early next week. We won’t see 20 degrees again until Tuesday at the latest. If 20 is our high that day, we will tie the record for longest stretch at or below 20 degrees. Even after Tuesday, temperatures stay below average for the rest of the week.
