A “prolonged” period of lake effect snow is heading to the Chicago area Friday and Saturday, with bursts of snow possible for some, six or more inches of accumulations for others and a band of snow building over Lake Michigan set to wobble between northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
The incoming system prompted the National Weather Service to issue winter storm warnings, watches and winter weather advisories for multiple counties as the snow band continues to develop.
Several rounds of snow are possible with the system through Saturday night, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. The first round was expected to move in during the late morning hours Friday.
As of early Friday morning, here’s what to expect and when.
Friday morning: ‘Burst’ of lake effect snow in Illinois
In Cook, DuPage and Lake Counties in Illinois, a winter weather advisory will go into effect at 9 a.m., lasting until 6 p.m. In Cook County at 3 p.m., that advisory will become a winter storm watch.
According to the NWS, counties under the winter weather advisory could see “a quick 1 to 3 inches of accumulation” within a two-to-three hour period, starting at about 9 a.m. The snow band will wobble throughout the day, Roman said, leading to “bursts” of lake effect snow.
“Locally higher amounts possible with lake-enhanced snow over Lake County,” the NWS added.
Those snow bursts could lead to slick, slippery roads and hazardous conditions, with the NWS warning the conditions could impact the afternoon and evening commute.
Because lake effect snow is often localized, conditions will vary across short distances. The biggest impacts will be felt in areas immediately along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
“During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from near white out conditions in very heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away,” the NWS said. “Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.”
Friday afternoon, evening: Winter storm watch, warnings in effect
At 3 p.m. Friday, a winter storm watch will go into effect for Cook County. At that time in northwest Indiana, Lake and Porter Counties will be under a winter storm warning.
“For the winter storm watch, heavy lake effect snow possible, first over a short period this evening, then again late tonight through Saturday morning,” the NWS said, of what Cook County can expect.
In northwest Indiana, heavy lake effect snow was also possible, with even higher accumulations and bigger impacts. Travel could become “very difficult to nearly impossible” at times north of US Route 30, the NWS said, with “near white out conditions.”
For those parts, the main window for the heaviest snowfall is expected Friday night through Saturday morning, Roman said, with snowfall rates of two or more inches per hour in northwest Indiana and just east of the Illinois-Indiana state line.
Saturday: More lake effect snow possible
The lake effect snow band could shift back to northeast Illinois Saturday, the NWS said, bringing “a period of heavy lake effect snow for several hours.”
That snow was expected to come to an end by evening, Roman said.
How much snow could we get?
Snow totals will vary depending on where you live, Roman said.
East of the Dan Ryan and I-57 and in northwest Indiana, six or more inches of snow was expected, and isolated totals of up to a foot were possible.
In Illinois, counties to the west could see just a trace of snow, while counties along the lake could see between one to three inches.
To the southeast, more snow could fall, with between three and six inches possible.
