Mollie Stone’s shutting down San Mateo store

Mollie Stone’s Market, a family-owned grocery store that has operated for 25 years in San Mateo, will close when its lease expires.

When that is or will be, the grocer did not share, but the San Mateo Daily Journal reported that the store would begin discounting merchandise thsi week and that the closure was likely to be within one to two weeks.

The grocery store chain announced the forthcoming closure Jan. 26 in a press statement, citing “changing market dynamics and infrastructure limitations at the site.”

Staff members will transition to work at other locations, including their nearby Burlingame store, one of six in the chain.

“We are incredibly grateful to the San Mateo community and to our loyal customers who have shopped with us week after week. Unfortunately, as our lease expires, we reached the difficult conclusion that we could no longer sustain operations at this location,” said owner and CEO Mike Stone.

The 40-year-old regional grocery chain began in Redwood City and today has locations in Palo Alto, Burlingame, San Bruno, San Francisco, Sausalito and Greenbrae.
