CONCORD — Clayton Valley didn’t overwhelm Campolindo with flash. It wore the Cougars down.
On Tuesday night, the Concord school tightened its grip until Campolindo simply ran out of air in a 57-33 home victory that felt more dominant than the box score would suggest.
Behind a suffocating half-court defense and an offense that operated with surgical patience, Clayton Valley controlled the game from start to finish. The Ugly Eagles bled the shot clock on nearly every possession, forcing Campolindo to defend deep into sets before punishing breakdowns with wide-open looks.
“With us it’s just about being solid and playing the percentages of the game,” Clayton Valley coach Frank Allocco said. “I think with us, it’s all about pace and play offensively. I feel like our defense slows the game down a little bit. It takes some of these teams 25 seconds, 30 seconds to get a shot off, and then we want to make sure we don’t want to rush a shot. We want to play with pace. I thought we found a pretty good balance of that tonight.”

Their methodical offense outscored Campolindo 13-5 in the third quarter behind nine points from Ellis in the period.
“We had a height difference at almost every position, so we were just trying to attack mismatches,” Ellis said of Clayton Valley’s third-quarter run. “We just felt like we could get anything we wanted.”
