Tesoro boys basketball overwhelms San Juan Hills to move closer to league title

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Last season in the South Coast League, a team was undefeated in league play and headed towards a league championship when a third-place team pulled an upset and threw the league standings into disarray.

Tesoro’s boys basketball team made sure that history did not repeat itself as it dominated San Juan Hills 74-39 on Wednesday at Tesoro High.

San Juan Hills was the aforementioned undefeated team in the South Coast League last season when it was upset by Tesoro, a team it had beaten by 42 points earlier that season.

Tesoro (23-3, 6-0) beat San Juan Hills 62-58 in the first matchup between the two teams this season, and Titans coach Steve Garrett didn’t enter Wednesday’s game overconfident.

“Coaches are naturally paranoid and I fall into that category,” Garrett said. “You think of all the worst case scenarios, but you just try to prepare your team and do your best. We played hard and played together so that was great.”

Tesoro led by as many as 46 points on Wednesday and never led by less than 10 points after the first five minutes of the game.

San Juan Hills (14-12, 4-3) was playing without its top scorer, Garrett Brehmer, who had a career-high 31 points the first time the Stallions played Tesoro.

Without Brehmer, San Juan Hills had to work very hard to get open looks at the basket. The Stallions had just 24 points entering the fourth quarter and had just eight points in the paint.

“Last game, their two stars combined for over 50 points so we like this better,” Garrett said. “They lose a lot without Garrett. He’s had a great career and it’s more than just his scoring that I’m sure they missed tonight. When that team gets healthy, they are going to be a big problem in the playoffs.”

Carson Hatch led Tesoro with 22 points. Max Draper had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Draper had 10 points and five rebounds in the first quarter to help Tesoro grab a 10-point lead.

The senior had five points and eight rebounds in the third quarter before sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

“Last year they beat us by 40 and I wanted to give it back to them on our home court,” Draper said. “I’m glad we still control our destiny.”

The vast majority of Draper’s points came off of assists from his teammates. Dean Mika had six assists for Tesoro, five of them were to Draper. Hatch and Noah Aranda also had multiple assists to Draper.

“Our offense is just ‘find the open guy,’” Garrett said. “We have a lot of shooters, so I was glad to see layups and our guys finding the open guy.”

Owen Hatch added 14 points for Tesoro and Madden Garrett had six rebounds.

Tesoro outrebounded San Juan Hills 35-27 and had 36 points in the paint compared to eight for the Stallions.

Rocco Jensen led San Juan Hills with 12 points and six rebounds. Freshman Cash Harris had seven points and the Stallions made five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Tesoro can clinch a share of the South Coast League championship with a win Friday against Dana Hills. The Titans wrap the regular season against second-place San Clemente, who Tesoro narrowly beat by three points last week.

Tesoro beat Dana Hills by 29 points in its first matchup against the Dolphins, but the Titans aren’t overlooking Dana Hills in anticipation for its big game against San Clemente.

“All we talk about all year is it’s a one-game season. We don’t even talk about the next game after that,” Garrett said. “It doesn’t matter what happened three games ago. It’s all irrelevant.”

San Juan Hills will host San Clemente on Friday.
