‘Dew, Dube’: Suryakumar Yadav explains why India batted second in IND vs NZ 4th T20I

India cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav explained the rationale behind batting second in the IND vs NZ 4th T20I on Wednesday. After winning three matches on the trotc, the hosts were handed a 50-run thrashing by New Zealand in Visakhapatnam, denting their momentum heading into the T20 World Cup 2026. India were bowled out for 165 runs while chasing the 215-run target set by NZ, losing their first game in the five-match series.

Why did India bat second in Vizag?

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Yadav explained that the team intentionally played six batters and five bowlers in order to challenge themselves before the T20 world Cup. The Indian captain noted that India had batted first in the earlier contests and he wanted to check how the team would fare when chasing a huge target while having lost two or three wickets. SKY claimed that a good partnership could have seen India get across the line but that wasn’t the case on Wednesday.

“We purposely played six batters. Wanted to have five bowlers and challenge ourselves. We wanted to play the players who were part of the World Cup squad. We have been batting well batting first. Wanted us to see how we bat when two or three down while chasing 180-200. With heavy dew, one or two partnerships like Dube batted, one partnership could have made a difference,” Suryakumar Yadav said.

Tim Seifert (36-ball 62) and Devon Conway (44 off 23) set the stage with a 100-run opening stand. But New Zealand lost steam in the middle overs, losing quick wickets. Jasprit Bumrah bowled three exceptional overs before conceding 19 runs in the 19th over. But New Zealand ended up with 215/7, thanks to Daryl Mitchell’s 18-ball 39.

Shivam Dube was the top-scorer for India in the run-chase, with his 65-run knock standing out. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck, Sanju Samson managed to score just 24, captain SKY 8 and Rinku Singh 39.
