U.S. News & World Report has released its newest ranking of the best online education programs, and multiple Midwest schools were named among the top.
According to the list of 2026 Best Online Programs, two Illinois programs were named among the best of the best. An Indiana program also made the cut.
The ranking evaluated nearly 1,850 online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at accredited institutions and ranked them based on how well they are designed for distance learning, “effectiveness at awarding affordable degrees in a reasonable time frame” and more.
“Online education continues to be a vital path for professionals, parents and service members seeking to advance their careers and broaden their knowledge with necessary flexibility,” LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News, said in a statement. “The 2026 Best Online Programs rankings are an essential tool for prospective students, providing rigorous, independent analysis to help them choose a high-quality program that aligns with their personal and professional goals.”
The ranking looked at bachelor’s programs and master’s programs in disciplines like MBA, business, engineering, IT, criminal justice, education and nursing.
The University of Illinois Chicago was among the top bachelor’s programs, according to the list.
Meanwhile, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign made the cut for its engineering program. Also named to that list was Purdue University in Illinois.
