Netflix releases first-look trailer for new adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s iconic Harry Hole books

It wouldn't quite be a crime drama without a complicated detective at its helm and taking that trope to new heights is Netflix's latest thriller, Detective Hole, which is based on the bestselling Harry Hole novels by Jo Nesbø.

Fans of the original books will know this broody central character all too well but thanks to an official teaser trailer that's just dropped, we get to see just how Hole goes about getting results in his professional life and leaving his personal life somewhat dwindling.

In the teaser, we see The Last Kingdom's Tobias Santelmann as Hole, drinking at late night bars, getting into physical scraps and punching people square in the face. Nevertheless, he's good at his job, his colleague admits – he's just not necessarily good at everything else.

The Killing's Joel Kinnaman stars as Hole's colleague Tom Waaler, who may seem similar to Hole in terms of their professional capabilities, but is clearly hiding some secrets of his own.

As the tension builds, we see Hole come undone literally as he's seen tearing an investigation wall apart, with pictures flying everywhere. You can watch it for yourself below.

It was just last month that we had a release date for the new series confirmed, with the new crime thriller set to land on Netflix this March.

As we see in the teaser, the series is very much concerned with a central serial killer case but also, Hole's growing suspicions over his colleague Waaler.

As per the synopsis, the series is "is a whodunnit serial killer mystery led by famed anti-hero Harry Hole. Underneath the surface, this series is a nuanced character drama about two police officers – and supposed colleagues – operating on opposite sides of the law."

It continues: "Throughout the season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long-time adversary and corrupt detective Tom Waaler. Harry is a brilliant but tormented homicide detective who struggles with his demons. As the two navigate the blurred ethical lines of the criminal justice system, Harry must do all he can to catch a serial killer and bring Waaler to justice before it is too late."

Bestselling author Nesbø also serves as series creator and executive producer on the series, which is the first to be based on Nesbø's bestsellers. With 13 novels making up the literary series, there's certainly plenty of source material so there's no telling where this Netflix adaptation could go.

On bringing the central anti-hero character to life, Nesbø said in a statement: “It’s been just great working with Tobias Santelmann and creating a character that is fresh, still  true to the character and his universe in the novels. I’m really looking forward to presenting this Harry Hole to the audience.”

Similarly, lead star Santelmann also said: “Stepping into Harry Hole’s shoes has been a tremendous honor and a thrilling challenge. Jo Nesbø’s world is so rich, and Harry is a truly complex character. I’m thankful for this opportunity, and I hope the audience will enjoy our Harry Hole. Bringing him to life, and working with everyone involved, has been a true privilege.”

The rest of the cast for Detective Hole includes Ellen Helinder, Anders Baasmo, Kåre Conradi, Simon J Berger, Peter Stormare, Fridtjov Såheim, Eili Harboe, Atle Antonsen, Manish Sharma, Jesper Christensen and Kristoffer Joner.

Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole will stream on Netflix from Thursday 26th March 2026. Sign up for Netflix from £5.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
