Best of the Week: Music, theater and an inspirational talk

The snow is melting and the (relatively) good weather is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

So if you’re looking to hunker down this weekend you better get those excuses ready.

But, with the slate of events around Greeley upcoming, it’s likely that no excuses will be necessary. Here are just a few of many events the Greeley area has to offer.

Friends of Baseball Breakfast of Champions: 8 a.m. Saturday at Island Grove Regional Park, 421 N. 15th Ave.

Island Grove will once again welcome a true baseball legend Saturday, with 9-time MLB All Star Gary Sheffield taking the stage at the annual Breakfast of Champions.

Sheffield played 22 seasons with eight teams, retiring with 2,689 hits and 509 home runs — making him just one of 25 players in history to hit over 500 career home runs.

Sheffield was the National League batting champion in 1992, hitting a career-best .330 with the San Diego Padres. He also won a World Series with the Florida Marlins (now the Miami Marlins) in 1997.

Tickets are $20 and are available at Garretson’s Sports Center, 3817 W. 10th St., Rogue Play Trampoline Park, 5800 W. 18th St., and Sears Real Estate, 2021 Clubhouse Dr., Suite 100. Tickets are also available online at NoCoFriendsofBaseball.com.

Friends of Baseball is a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities to play baseball in Northern Colorado. All proceeds benefit Friends of Baseball youth baseball programs.

Hops & Honky Tonk: 8 p.m Saturday at the Moxi Theater, 802 9th St.

On Saturday, a pair of downtown Greeley staples are teaming up for “a night of country, twang and good beer.”

Greg Schochet & Little America will headline the inaugural “Hops & Honky-Tonk” with their style of Western swing harkening back to the halcyon 70s. The Poudre Valley Playboys, mixing rockabilly surf with dance moves and “sick guitar pick’n,” will provide support on the ticket.

WeldWerks Brewery, 508 8th Ave., will be offering six limited beers only available at the event.

Tickets start at $19.50 and are available at MoxiTheater.com.

Beetlejuice Jr.: 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Union Colony Civic Center, 701 10th Ave.

A Dance Place will be putting on four renditions of Beetlejuice Jr. this weekend. Saturday’s performances will feature the junior cast (ages 9-13) and Sunday’s performances will feature the teen cast (ages 13-19).

“A hilarious, high-energy production filled with quirky characters, bold humor and unforgettable musical moments,” and event description reads.

Adapted from the original broadway musical — and based off the hit movie — Beetlejuice Jr., brings all of the same irreverent humor and the same heartwarming story as the full-length production, just catered toward younger performers and audience members and shortened to 60 minutes.

Tickets start at $18 and are available at UCStars.Showare.com.
