Killing of ICU nurse in Minneapolis: Readers share outrage and determination
Re: “Federal agents shoot, kill ICU nurse,” Jan. 25 news story
I know you are all quite aware of how this quotation is not only relevant to today’s horrors, but exists because autocrats exist:
“That’s what the terrorists want. Not the deaths of a few hundred, or even a few thousand. They want us to turn on each other. To do to each other what they cannot. They want anarchy.” — Louise Penny, “The Grey Wolf”
Since we are the people, since this is our country, and since we are the only ones to stop this malady peacefully, then that is what we must do. We must not use our fists or our guns to stop ICE. We have a right to assemble peacefully and to speak our minds. We must use our minds to not only overcome evil but also to honor, respect, and believe in justice.
The Republicans in Congress could rid us of this president, and they have the power to do just that. But Republicans do not love our country as we do. They will not defend it to the bone, like so many of us have. They are cowards who lack enlightenment, and they are unable to reach deep into their miserable souls and save our country. I personally challenge them to do just that.
We must not turn on ICE, even when they break our hearts. We must let them rot in their own poisonous, misguided, and decaying minds. For who among Americans could live with themselves after using lethal force to kill their fellow Americans and then receive full immunity, brace us against one another, and scream for anarchy? We have enjoyed our freedom and way of life for two and a half centuries; hence, we must not fall for their failing antics. There are too many of us, too few of them, and our courts and our Constitution will stand.
Louise Lear Clemmer, Lafayette
I am outraged, and you should be, too! ICE tactics are an insult to law enforcement. These masked thugs have no idea how to restrain, control, detain or arrest an individual. ICU nurse Alex Pretti was on the ground on his elbows and knees and was in no way brandishing a weapon or assaulting agents. It is a lie and it is what Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino are telling us, and they should be ashamed of themselves.
Please, someone, ask Noem and Bovino how their agents were trained to restrain, detain, control and arrest individuals. All I see is punching, pushing, kicking, chemical spray to the face, and, sadly, we have seen killing. Dedicated, honest and upstanding police officers are cringing to see ICE clowns fumble with a citizen on his knees and elbows, and you should be outraged at what we saw!
Before anyone critiques my opinion, I will close by saying I am a former 12-year police veteran and I am outraged by what our country has become.

“Crackdown” is a favored word of both the news media and “the authorities.” For the latter, it can serve to obscure a multitude of sins. If a masked stranger appeared at your front door and shot you dead, it would be a criminal outrage, at least for a few news cycles. But if a masked law enforcement officer killed you without provocation, well, those mistakes just happen in the heat of a “crackdown,” and such things somehow can be portrayed as more excusable, and the flimsiest of excuses can be offered.
When those charged with enforcing the law turn to violating it, that’s not a crackdown, but a crack-up.
