Iconic Looney Tunes Library Finds New Home at Network Known for Honoring the Oscars

America's most beloved gang of cartoon characters have a new home.

Turner Classic Movies, a longtime channel that will begin airing its Academy Awards tribute coverage next month, has now become “the ongoing television home” of the iconic Acme library from Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the ragtag group might recall seeing their classic shorts on HBO Max in recent years. But in late 2022, the streamer eliminated more than 250, from 1950-2004, when its license expired and the streaming arm of Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to renew it, Vulture reported at the time. And last year, another 255 shorts produced from 1930-1949 were excised.

But starting on the night of Feb. 2 the cherished animated films — more than 750 in all — will begin running on TCM (owned by WBD) as part of a new six-year deal, THR noted on Monday, Jan. 27. Forty-five shorts featuring Bugs will screen through Feb. 7, and a curated selection of related full-length features will follow.

“By making TCM an ongoing home for this iconic library, we’re able to present these cartoons with the care they deserve, alongside the classic films they helped influence,” Charlie Tabesh, TCM's senior VP of programming and content strategy, said in a statement, per THR.

Then comes the Oscars-centric programming on TCM. Starting Feb. 13, the network's annual “31 Days of Oscar” kicks off and leads to the 98th annual Academy Awards on March 15, THR reports. Each day is organized around a distinct theme, including “Oscar Goes Big,” “Oscar Goes West,” “Oscar Goes International” and “Oscar Goes Hollywood.”

And speaking of classic movies, one Oscar-nominated icon whose work is still making waves in pop culture is Alfred Hitchcock. It wasjust announced that The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) — the silent thriller that put him on the map — can now be enjoyed as a vertical microdrama thanks to the mobile app Tattle TV.
