A suburban Hinsdale running shop was dealt a flood of problems after a pipe burst in the middle of the night during the extreme cold.
“The flood of water that was coming from the ceiling — all over our apparel and merchandise — was devastating,” Tiffany Cruickshank, the owner of Peak Lifestyle, recounted.
Cruickshank’s phone rang at 3 a.m. on Sunday.
The message on the other end: trouble.
Freezing temperatures proved too much for a pipe inside the running and lifestyle store along Washington Street.
Thousands of dollars in merchandise was gone in a flash, and half a dozen employees were sidelined.
“With employees not able to work, it’s not generating any income, it’s tough,” Cruickshank said. “This isn’t just a couple of days — this is going to be a long process.”
The store is in the process of trying to salvage merchandise and rebuild.
Meanwhile, more than two dozen fans are running nonstop, trying to dry out the store and stop further damage.
As they rebuild, the challenge ahead is steep.
“We have to replace all the apparel and shoe inventory we lost. A lot of that is challenging — there’s limited supply, and it’s hard to reorder,” Cruickshank said.
For a store that normally sees hundreds of runners lacing up toward a goal, they’re now facing a marathon of their own.
Their finish line is reopening.
“It feels like the beginning of training for a marathon. We know where the finish line is — but there’s a lot of unknown right now. We’re confident that when we’re ready, we’ll open those doors and be back to business as usual,” Cruickshank said.
