Iconic 70s Rocker, 72, Reveals New Details About 2026 Vegas Residency

It's been close to 50 years since Styx released their multi-platinum album Pieces of Eight, but it's still a huge hit with fans. So it was a big deal when the band announced they would be performing the record in its entirety for their 2026 Vegas residency, which kicked off on Jan. 23...but as it turns out, frontman Tommy Shaw was taken by surprise when his bandmates decided to revisit the 1978 album.

“Apparently, they like it,” the 72-year-old quipped in a recent interview with USA Today.

"I couldn’t believe the band wanted to do that one," Shaw continued. "I’m a songwriter, so I’m insecure about my own music...We started playing some of those songs like 'Great White Hope' and I forgot how nerdy we are with some of the instrumental breaks that we take, a little prog rock-ish. It’s amazing that we played it back then, but we just didn’t think about it."

When asked about the "appeal" of touring after so many years on the road, Shaw explained that one reason why the band still plays is simply "because we can."

"Most of us are married and I haven’t seen any tears when I leave to go on the road," he added with a laugh, adding, "My wife is as busy as I am. I always blow her a kiss when I leave and if I forgot, I’ll put [a video] on my phone and send it to her. I’d feel bad about it otherwise."

Shaw went on to say that his favorite touring accessories are a "pillow with a silk pillowcase" and a "really nice blanket."

"I have to be careful in hotel rooms because I’m a singer," he said. "Most musicians want to have it about 70 degrees or cooler and the crew guys like it ice cold and the bus drivers like it freezing. But I have to sing so it’s always, please let me have 72!"

Hotel room hazards aside, Shaw said it's "so much fun" to be a member of Styx.

"This band is so detail-oriented and there is so much joy," he said. "We’ve gotten away from the bad vibes between band members or anything uncomfortable and now there is a lot of laughing and lots of dinners. We like to go out together. The crew likes to hang out with each other. The socializing is a big plus."

Luckily for fans who can't make it to Vegas, Styx is scheduled to go on tour with fellow rock legends Chicago this summer...yet another opportunity for musical socializing.
