British 80s Icon Announces Rare U.S. Tour With Full Band

British MTV legend Thomas Dolby is returning to the road for a rare run of U.S. headlining dates, bringing a full band with him for an intimate spring tour.

The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter will play select shows in the Northeast and Midwest beginning in mid-April, marking an uncommon opportunity for American fans to see Dolby perform in this expanded format. Known for typically appearing solo, Dolby will instead be joined by a distinguished group of collaborators for this limited run.

The band includes acclaimed bassist and vocalist Gail Ann Dorsey, best known for her longtime work with David Bowie, along with multi-instrumentalist Andrew Lipke. Dorsey will also open each night with a solo set, making the shows a double bill spotlighting both artists’ extensive musical legacies.

Rather than a traditional greatest-hits concert, the tour is designed as an intimate storytelling experience. Dolby will blend music, anecdotes, and reflections from his unusual career path, revisiting material from the 1980s alongside stories that trace his journey from street busker in Europe to global pop innovator.

Dolby’s career has always blurred the lines between music and invention. Best known to mainstream audiences for his 1982 hit “She Blinded Me With Science,” he was also a sought-after collaborator and producer, working with artists including Foreigner, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, George Clinton, and David Bowie. He famously shared the stage with Bowie at Live Aid and later performed with Pink Floyd's Roger Waters at The Wall in Berlin.

Beyond music, Dolby founded a Silicon Valley technology company in the 1990s and co-invented the polyphonic ringtone technology used in billions of mobile devices. He also served as music director for TED Conferences for more than a decade and is currently an endowed professor at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.

The tour also builds on renewed interest in Dolby’s personal story. In recent years, he has reflected publicly on how he adopted his stage name after losing a bet early in his career, a moment that helped cement his identity just as the new wave era was taking shape. From that unlikely origin, Dolby went on to become one of the most distinctive figures of 1980s pop, equally at home with synthesizers, storytelling, and technology.

Tickets for the shows are on sale now, with meet-and-greet packages available for the first time.

Dolby’s career continues to evolve decades after his initial success. He received the Roland Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 and has earned four Grammy nominations over the course of his career. This limited U.S. tour will offer a preview of a much larger performance concept he is developing for late 2026.
