Nearly 500 workers across Illinois to be laid off, WARN Act shows

Nearly 500 workers spanning a range of industries are set to be laid off across statewide, a recent spreadsheet from the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining (WARN) Act revealed.

A total of 488 employees were given layoff notices in December, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Some job cuts are expected to start in the coming days and weeks, while others began last month.

Not all layoffs meet the requirements for WARN Act notices; only companies with 75 or more full-time employees are covered.

Of the eight companies that issued layoff notices in December, seven were in the Chicago area.

The greatest number of layoffs are slated to take place at APL Logistics, a supply-chain services company. According to the notice, 230 employees will be laid off following the closures of warehouse facilities in Minnoka. The layoffs are set to be completed by Feb. 28.

In the second-largest round of layoffs, 195 workers are expected to be let go at S&S Activewear in Bolingbrook. Forty-eight people lost their jobs in December, and an additional 28 people are expected to be laid off in February. Most of the layoffs – 119 – are planned for November, however.

Separately, Microplastics Inc., an insert molding manufacturer, laid off 86 workers at its St. Charles facility on Dec. 19 after the business was sold.

Others layoffs in the report include:

10 Roads Express, LLC – Homewood – 55 employees Adare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – Aurora – 21 employees Everest Insurance – Chicago – 37 employees Ryder Integrated Logistics, Inc. – Saint Elmo – 59 employees
