Gus Kenworthy shared new insight into what was really going on in his love life amid his previously rumored relationship with Miley Cyrus.
The Olympian, 34, revealed similarities between his life and the popular sports romance series Heated Rivalry in a Sunday, January 25, interview with The New Yorker.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen myself reflected onscreen like that, in such a substantial way,” he said. “I also had a secret relationship, with these clandestine meetings and hookups.”
Heated Rivalry follows professional hockey players Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rosanov (Connor Storrie) as they hide their romance from the world. Meanwhile, Shane publicly dates actress Rose Landry (Sophie Nélisse) while coming to terms with his sexuality.

Kenworthy—who came out as gay in October 2015—recalled being at the center of dating rumors with Cyrus, 33, in 2014 after telling the media she was his celebrity crush amid the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
“Miley Cyrus was my own Rose, this famous person that I was suddenly linked to,” he noted. “And as much as I kind of wanted it—because that’s the person you would want to be with if you’re straight, someone successful and beautiful and talented—it’s not the same as when you’re with a guy.”

After Kenworthy’s comments about his alleged crush on Cyrus made headlines, the two connected, with the singer following the freestyle skier on Twitter. However, Kenworthy actually had a secret boyfriend at the time.
“It was surreal for a number of reasons, but I was also digging myself this deeper and deeper hole,” he recounted. “I actually love her. But then there was some flirty texting and I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing? I don’t want to do this anymore. I don’t want to keep waking up and lying.’”
At one point during the 2014 Olympics, Kenworthy considered coming out publicly if he won a gold medal.
“I wasn’t out, and I wasn’t ready to be out, but I had a boyfriend,” he explained. “I had this dream that I was gonna land the winning run, ski up to him and kiss him. And then that was gonna be my coming out to everybody and my silent protest. But it didn’t happen.”
Kenworthy ultimately won a silver medal in the 2014 Olympics. The following year, he publicly came out as gay in an interview with ESPN. At the time, he was dating Robin Macdonald, though the two later split. He has since moved on with boyfriend Andrew Rigby.
As for Cyrus, she came out as pansexual in 2015. More recently, she confirmed her engagement to Maxx Morando in December 2025 after four years of dating.
