A loaded Colt handgun believed to date back to 1903 was found inside the wall of a whiskey distillery in the south suburbs of Chicago, police said.
The Thornton Police Department said their officers responded to the Thornton Distilling Company after a “unique discovery” was made while work was being done to the walls of the historic building, located at 400 East Margaret Street.
The Colt handgun was found still loaded and inside a leather holster, police said.
Police said a records check confirmed the handgun is “clear and not associated with any criminal activity.”
Based on the location and condition of the gun, police believe it has been hidden there for many years.
Video provided by Instagram user @whiskey_with_maks shows police removing the gun from the wall.
In the video, a police officer can be seen reading a label off the side of the gun.
“Patented April 20, 1897, December 22, 1903,” he says.
The gun was returned to the distilling company owner, police said, and there is no danger to the public.
“Just another reminder of the fascinating history hidden in our community!” police said.
