Melissa Gilbert plans to continue to support her husband, Timothy Busfield, in court as he faces child sex abuse charges.
The Little House on the Prairie alum, 61, already appeared in the courtroom audience earlier this week during a hearing to determine if her husband would stay in jail while awaiting trial. Gilbert could be seen mouthing the words, “Thank you, God” when the judge ordered Busfield to be released on Tuesday, January 20.
“The court hearing was obviously very emotional and stressful,” a source close to the couple told People. “Things are clearly far from over, but the main focus of getting Tim out of jail was accomplished. They’re both very grateful. Melissa has been sick with worry that something would happen to him in jail.”
Since his release, the couple have been “very involved” with their legal team as they work on Busfield’s defense. The source claimed they also have a “huge group of friends” that have been checking in on them daily.

“Melissa is very grateful for the support,” added the source. “She’ll be attending all the court hearings with Tim. She believes he’s innocent.”
As Us Weekly previously reported, Busfield was arrested in New Mexico earlier this month after the actor and director was accused of inappropriately touching a set of twin boys who worked with him during his stint as a director on The Cleaning Lady from 2022 to 2024. According to the complaint, he allegedly picked the boys up, tickled them and touched their “private areas” on several occasions over the two to three-year period. One boy was reportedly left very “afraid” of him.

Last year, during an interview with police, he said it was “highly likely” that he came into physical contact with the twins on set, but said he did not recall picking up the boys or tickling them at any time.
“I’m always around people, right? It would be, you know, in front of the parents. There would never be a weird moment about it,” he said, according to the arrest warrant obtained by Us. “I don’t really remember picking those boys up.”
Busfield’s lawyer also alleged that he took and passed a lie detector test in connection with the case. (Lie detector tests are often inadmissible in court as they’re not considered reliable.)

Throughout the investigation, Gilbert has stuck by her husband’s side. In an emotional letter to the judge presiding over the case, she begged the court to keep the West Wing actor safe from harm.
“I only want this extraordinary man safe and whole. So, I will close by asking you to please, please, take care of my sweet husband,” she wrote at the time. “As he is my protector, I am his, but I cannot protect him now and I think that, more than anything else, is what is truly breaking my heart, I am relying on [you] to protect him for me.”
